Abstract:
Objective To investigate the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor 1 (EGFR) in cervical cancer and to evaluate its clinicopathological significance. Methods The immunohistochemical EnVision method was used to evaluate the expression of EGFR in 120 cases of cervical cancer, 49 cases of high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2~3), 40 cases of low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN1) and 37 cases of normal cervical tissues. Results EGFR protein expression rates in normal cervical tissues, CIN1, CIN2~3 and cervical cancer were 10.8% (4/37), 12.5% (5/40), 42.9% (21/49) and 89.2% (107/120), respectively. The EGFR positive rate in cervical cancer was significantly higher than those in CIN2~3, CIN1 and normal cervical tissues(P<0.01); and the positive rate in CIN2~3 was significantly higher than those in CIN1 and normal cervical tissues(P<0.01); but there was no significant difference between normal cervical tissue and CIN1 (P >0.05). EGFR protein positive rate was higher in patients with deeper invasion of cervical carcinoma(P<0.01). Conclusion Results indicates that EGFR may play an important role in the development of cervical cancer and it may become a potential target for anti-cancer therapy.
