Abstract:
Objective To investigate the emotional intelligence and related factors in patients with bipolar disorder. Methods The emotional intelligence of 133 patients with bipolar disorder in remission and 127 healthy subjects were evaluated and compared. The factors related to emotional intelligence in bipolar patients were analyzed with Pearson regression analysis. Results The emotion use ability in bipolar disorder patients was lower than that in the healthy subjects (17.045 ±4.504 vs 19.803 ±1.623, P <0.05), while the emotional understanding ability was higher than that in control group (16.481 ±2.996 vs 14.055±2.001, P<0.05). There were no significant differences in emotion perception, emotion management and total scores of emotional intelligence between two groups (P >0.05). Manic episodes were negatively correlated with emotional use and emotional intelligence scores (r=-0.334, -0.297, P<0.05). The number of depressive episodes was negatively correlated with emotional perception and emotional intelligence scores (r =-0.383, -0.257, P <0.05). The course of disease was negatively correlated with the emotional perception, use of emotion and intelligence management scores (r=-0.372, -0.313, -0.182 and -0.204, P >0.05). Conclusion The emotional intelligence of patients with bipolar disorder is different to the general population, which is related to the course of disease, the number and the form of disease episodes.
